Welcome to Birdland

— birdland by patti smith

Birdland Films was created by Kerinne Jenkins in 2017 as a starting point. To establish a place where other like minded filmmakers, creatives and artists could come to collaborate and create.

We love genre, and creating worlds that don't exist, developing story worlds and follow the belief that we are free to create anything we could possibly imagine.

Whether it's a film, a podcast, a music video, an installation, a play or a poem. Whether it's for long or short, for big screens or small, there is no one format that we will limit ourselves to. Birdland Films hopes to grow and change with every person who comes into the fold.

But there is one rule of Birdland.

That at the heart of any project is a focus on character and story and the world they belong too. It might seem like we're stating the obvious, but we want to make sure that this comes through in anything we make, whether it's a traditional narrative, a case study, a commercial or an installation.

Let's never get too distracted by all the other parts of the process that we forget why we wanted to make these things in the first place.

IN DEVELOPMENT

CATTLE & MORE

In April 2017 we'll be filming our proof of concept short film 'Cattle'. Set in central west region of NSW, it's a science fiction/coming of age film about a teenage girl on a cattle farm who will have to go out into the night to find out what's killed one of their cows. (Writer/Director: Kerinne Jenkins, Producer : Katie Amos).

We're also developing a multi-platform science fiction project called The Divide and a hybrid doco/narrative feature The Kill Club that looks at the relationships between a group of fifteen and sixteen year old girls and how they go about saving each others lives on a constant basis.

STORY & PEOPLE

OUR FOCUS

We think stories and people are what make a video come to life, and that both elements combined can help to give an audience insight into a product or brand. We approach any type of video with the same ethos. What's special about the business or product, who are the people, what makes it unique and how can we tell that story.

Our last video was for Honeywell Scanning and Mobility and we travelled to Viridian Glass to talk too employee's who'd been with the company generally for ten plus years. It was amazing to not only feel how much they cared about what they got to do everyday, but to also see the glass making process from start to finish, at one of the last manufacturing plant in Australia.

We've collaborated with Kennards Hire, European Motor Distributors, the Ports of Auckland, Ryans Transport, Viridian and more.

THE SHORT FILM

A 2o min Proof of Concept

The Cattle short follows a sixteen year old girl, SARAH, living on a cattle farm in NSW, who is struggling with the fact that her mother has a brain tumour that is never talked about.

But when one of their cows is found dead, kilometres from their farm, Sarah will find herself going out into the night looking for answers with her younger sister Maddy in tow.

The Cattle short explores what is to feel trapped by the circumstances around us, the desire we can often follow to isolate ourselves with our troubles, and our need to go out and face our fears to discover just how strong we are.

Shooting in late April 2017, the Cattle short will be filming in the central west (Cowra/Wyangala) region.

THE CATTLE CREW

The FEATURE FILM

The Bigger World

In the feature of Cattle, the story expands on the world of the short film when Sarah's mother is taken to hospital in a coma, leaving Sarah looking after her younger sister and their cattle farm by herself for a indefinite period.

Two workers are brought in to help out on the farm and Sarah will find herself making a new friendship with a nineteen year old cattle hand. But her initial calm at taking over the reins on the farm is broken when they're confronted by a death in the herd that doesn't make any sense.

The pressure to try and stay in control and keep her farm and younger sister safe, proves too much and Sarah ends up pushing everyone who tries to help away. And Sarah is alone with her sister when they see a strange light out in the night that can't possibly be from a natural cause.

Sarah will discover that the night holds something far stranger and more unknown then she could have imagined.
